Milwaukee: Moxies Southern Comfort

on Friday, May 18, 2012 in ,
I was back at hq meeting with our USA team. We had a lot o fun and looking to have a good team dinner. Our marketing manager who is a foodie in the area suggested Moxies. Even living in Atlanta I never really have grown an appetite for southern food. Too rich, to much.

I was not looking forward to it, but it's funny how when you least expect it a southern restaurant in the mid west will impress you. We had a prix fixes but I ordered some other items off the menu as well to sample. Fried pickles, red beans and rice & Mac and cheese. All were good but the Mac and cheese was crazy good! There were a few varieties of which we ordered the regular and one with chicken and jalapeños. Aside from the sweet tomatoes, and corn bread this was a good start. For the entree we ordered jambalaya, shrimp and grits, brisket and pulled pork. I don't eat pork so my options were limited but very good! Overall a wonderful place that I am looking forward to coming back to.

Munich: La Barraca

on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 in ,
I am very expressive for my distaste for German food. It's bland, looks funky and consists typically of fallic looking pieces of meat aka sausages. My dear German colleagues are aware of my feelings here and demonstrate their hospitality by making sure they take me out to Munich's best eateries.

The latest is La Barraca an Italian joint that has a really unique concept. It's a tapas style dining environment and all the orders are done by individual diners on iPads. You never speak to wait staff other than bringing out your food . The iPad menu is extremely easy to use and complete with pictures. problem is you can't really customize your requests and you can't order drinks based on your preference. But I found myself engulfed with the interactive menu. Now, the food is fantastic as well. I ordered the lasagna, grilled shrimp, gnocchi, and minestrone soup, all were delicious.

I highly recommend this place if you are in the Munich area. Hip, innovative and delicious.

Munich: Goa

on Sunday, February 26, 2012 in ,
Plain and simple, I have turned into my dad. In Germany I don't crave Wiener schnitzel, or sauerkraut, nope instead I seek out the best Indian food in the city. Stopped by Goa for lunch and had a veg thali or platter of 5 dishes served with rice and naan. Wow, that was fantastic!

I highly recommend this place, it was packed at lunch and no buffet, everything is cooked to order. Have to give it up for my Indian friends in Munich, great job!

Tarrytown NY: Caravela

on Thursday, February 16, 2012 in , ,
Where the heck is Tarrytown! Well it is upstate NY in the prominent Westchester county. Nice little town. Here over night an asked the valet guy for a good place still open. He suggested a Brazilian restaurant called Caravela. I went there and was a little nervous as I was the only person in there. Understandable since it was so late.

The owner took care of me and don't even offer a menu, said let me tell you what's good. Brought a shrimp scampi for apps with a Brazilian twist, and for the main course a delicious seafood paella.

Quite the memorable dining experience , would not have expected to get such an international flare in a little town.

New York: The Food Hall

on Thursday, February 16, 2012 in , , ,
Celebrity chef Todd English has a few places one of which is The Food Hall located in the basement of The Park Plaza hotel. Anticipate a wait if you walk in so try and make reservations. The name says it all, you have a choice fit for a king. Burgers, pizza, raw bar , sushi, you name it. My colleague describes it well "an upscale diner". The atmosphere is laid back, friendly.

You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The pickiest of eaters will find something.

This night for me was the Kobe beef burger with Kobe pastrami. Yeah that's right I did....

Dallas: Mia Tex Mex

on Saturday, February 11, 2012 in , , , ,
Was here for a conference and my colleague from the TX area suggested we goto to Mia's for dinner. This is a Dallas institution made famous by a big change in the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff. It marked the end of the Landry years with jimmy Johnson and jerry jones dining here before Landry was let go the next day.

At any rate the food was simple and fantastic. We had fajita nachos, and brisket tacos that were heavenly. They even had this Serrano pepper salsa that was tres spicy!

This place was so good we came back for lunch the next day. Highly recommend it of you are around the Dallas area!

San Francisco: The Crab House at Pier 39

on Sunday, January 29, 2012 in , ,
Was in town for a team gig. I remember coming to the area in years past and my friend setting up crab feasts for his birthday at the Olympic club. A very exclusive event but man was the food good. I wanted to see if there was another venue we could have a more open event for my work folks. The Crab House at Pier 39 fit the bill. Reasonably priced, nice location and best of all good food. I would say the garlic marinade was a little much but overall really good.

Bangor: Captain Nicks

on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 in ,
Here I am in Bangor ME a couple days left in the year still trying to close business to make 2011 a great year. While here you have to indulge in lobster so given the time of day I am free the best option according to the locals is captain nicks. On the menu for me tonight is an app of mussels in a white wine sauce and then a lazy lobster already de shelled and ready to eat.

For those more adventurous here are the instructions to crack your own meat.

The verdict, hmmm I have had better on Portland but maybe I didn't order the right dish here. I was a little underwhelmed at the amount d lobster that came with my meal. Should have been mounding above the bowl, it looks like the were a little skimpy on the main attraction.

Have to try somewhere else, problem is they are not open very late for dinner! See what happens tomorrow, stand by.
